Greetings readers! I’m Neil, one of those new guys at Triggertrap that you’ve heard so much about. You may be pleased to hear that my role here is as a full-time Android coder, updating and improving the Triggertrap Mobile app (among other exciting projects) on a daily basis. Earlier today, we released Triggertrap Mobile for Android version 1.2.0… But I also wanted to talk to you about what’s next…
As everyone seems to be more and more aware these days, Android is a great platform boasting more brilliant devices than you can shake a stick at. It’s come a long way since the early days and we at Triggertrap love it. In fact, I’ll let you into a secret: the majority of us on the Triggertrap team use Android handsets as their main smartphone – so there’s really no excuse for us to ignore it as a platform, is there?!
Team Triggertrap in action at the Triggertrap hackathon. Neil is top left, hacking away.
I’ve only been at Triggertrap for a short while, but already it’s been a great experience. I know that the people here are passionate about what they do, and so are the photographers in the wider Triggertrap community. I’ve loved seeing all of the amazing images that have been captured using the Triggertrap Mobile app.
At Triggertrap I want to create apps that make it simple to do the things that you want you want to do, to allow you to be more creative and inventive in your photography. I’m already working hard to make this and future versions of the Android app amazing. I know that the more amazing I can make the app for you, the more amazing results you’ll come up with, which in turn will amaze me and then we end up in a big, happy amazement loop (which has to be good a thing, right?).
The Future of Android and Triggertrap
I know that the future for Triggertrap Mobile on Android is bright. The team here have been listening to your feedback and comments and we’ve got a plan of action ready. No longer will the Android app be a second class citizen! The eagle-eyed and keen updaters among you will have noticed that this week we’ve already made updates to the current version of the app; adding our super-fun Bang mode to trigger your camera with sounds, and now with Wi-Fi master you can truly be the master of your own Android slaves.
But there’s much, much more to come. Can I say anything here? Well, just a little. We’ve got some big plans. First, we will be updating the current app to be a native Android app. This version will feel like it really belongs on your Android device. It will be more responsive, with a great user experience and a design that fits with the pretty new “Holo” theme that came in with Ice Cream Sandwich. Needless to say we will also be adding a number of new features and revamping and improving the settings.
In short, I’m really excited about the new Triggertrap Android app. It’s going to be a great leap forward in functionality and usability. I can’t give more details just yet, but I will say it’s going to be good, very good. Now you’ll have to excuse me, the coder-wrangler is cracking his whip and I’ve got a lot of things I need to get on with!
Hello, please activate Live View!!!
Hello Maik! I’m afraid it’s a little bit more involved than just activating it; Live view would require the use of a completely different technology than we’re currently using – but we’re looking into it! ~Haje
Great……
Is it possible to step the AF-S motor manually through the cable?
A button for ‘far’ and a button for ‘close’ focus?
It’s a make-or-break feature for me!
Hey, I find dis app awesome but unfortunately I’m stuck with a Windows Phone and was just wondering if this app will be coming on <Windows platform in near future..? :(
Not in the near future, I’m afraid, we’re focussing on Triggertrap Mobile for iOS and Android for now.
Great to hear your stepping it up a notch.
I just ditched my iPhone 4 and got the new HTC ONE (I should have switched a long time ago…)
I’m actually quite surprised by the lack of development with the Android side. Considering the openness of what you can do on Android I would have thought to see far MORE functionality on that than on iPhone.
Take for instance if you create a module for Tasker. Then the possabilities are endless. Imagine being able to setup Utter!, Tasker and Triggertrap to work by taking a photo when people say “Cheese”. That’s just a simple idea that’s already possible with Utter! and Tasker using the phones camera…
Anyway, keep up the great work and I’m looking forward to what you come out with next for Android!
Hi CJ,
just a sidenote: Did you get Triggertrap to work on your HTC One? I tried yesterday with a 4S and the One, and the HTC didn`t even recognize the dongle. First, I suspected the Beats Plugin to interfere, but turning it off had no effect. Any hints?
Regards,
Philipp
Hi Phillipp,
I just received the dongle today and it seems te be working on the HTC ONE –> I only tested is briefly. The new bang feature is also working. I’ll be testing some more next weekend
There seems to be at least one difference in the android app (besides not yet supported trigger modes) –> in several triggermodes for instance the timelapse mode is only get 1 slider, gap between shots, instead of the take ‘x’ pictures in ‘x’ time sliders. Is this difference intentional because now i would have to manually stop the timelapse.
Keep up the good work!
cheers,
Dirk Roelof
Any chance of this app coming to Blackberry
Can’t wait, I have always been an android fan. Apple have have bad press with tax cons and China issues so I would not touch an Apple item.
Even my brother who is one of these “I know every thing ” but doesn’t in reality changed to Android and loves it as if he was the first to get one!
My Triggertrap dongle is on order. I am sure my Nexus 7 and my Pentax K-30 will soon get to know each other quite well.
If there was only one feature that I wish I could have using my Nexus 7, it would be a lightning/fireworks trigger! For now it looks like I will have to build one of the several Arduino based designs. I’m sure Triggertrap’s ready-made lightning trigger is fairly priced, but it is still too expensive for the few times I would use it each year.
My dongle arrived yesterday. I have sadly discovered that the mobile app on my Nexus 7 tablet will not trigger the shutter on my Pentax K-30 camera …at least not with the unmodified Triggertrap settings. I know the issue is how the app is using the tablet because it does work (unmodified) when I installed the app on my HTC Incredible running Android 2.3.
I did not anticipate running off my phone because first, I am nearly maxed out on internal app memory and Triggertrap cannot be shifted to the SD card; and second, because I will likely replace my phone in the next few months with a Nexus 4 running the same OS level as my Nexus 7.
I am hoping the good folks at Triggertrap can find time to investigate this issue. Meanwhile, I will be exploring some forms of photography with Triggertrap that have previously been more difficult.
I have the same problem with my Trggertrap dongle with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. It also does not work on the Samsing Galaxy SII. It does work on a Sony Xperia Z and all apple devices. The sound from the Nexus devices and the SII is ompletely different to the more pure tone of the Xperia when I use the app through the main speaker. Therein lies the problem.
I have tried two separate dongles, one with a chrome and the other with a gold plug. Both behave the same.
Chris
We’ve had a few reports recently about the Nexus and Samsung Galaxy phones not wanting to give Triggertrap any love! I would suggest searching for sound specific or phone specific issues in our forum as some people have been coming up with some interesting solutions in there: tri.gg/forum
hi,
I’m a photographer so I got the TriggerTrap for the HDR mode. Don’t work well with my Motorola & Canon 6D. If I set for 7 exposures only 6 are taken and the exposures themselves are wrong (not 3 on either side of the middle exposure. Same with 9 exposures, takes only 8 and again exposures are wrong.
Looks so easy to use, so disappointing. Have I missed something?
Cheers
Sam
Haje hi,
Thanks for all your great help, it took some trial & error but we got there in the end.
Fantastic after sale service. I’m looking forward to using the TriggerTrap on my next real estate assignment.
Cheers
Sam
The cable supplied with my Triggertrap does not fit my Nexus 7 or Samsung Galaxy S2. Is there an adapter or another cable available?
Mike
Doh! Cable wrong way round sorry!
I’m a big fan of this app and dongle for my Canon DSLR camera. I’m wondering why there is no log-o-meter for Android? It seems only available for iOS. Is there a reason why you have not added it to the Android version.
Thanks.
Hey there! We never had time to implement it, I’m afraid – and, in fact, we’re possibly going to remove it from the iOS version; but stay tuned for version 2.0 of the apps – loads of new goodies coming to Android soon!
Any time frame for the Android upgrade?
We’re aiming for late summer!
The triggertrap dongle does not work with Samsung Galaxy S2. Is there a reason for this?
Really interested in this but only when the android app has motion sensor . Meantime I guess I’ll have to hang on to my old 20d and zig view for motion sensor photography. Hope you guys come up with the goods before I have to buy the zig view for the 60d or whatever is next.
Hi, like Kartik Menon I cannot get TriggerTrap to work on the Galaxy S2. Originally I thought it maybe due to mine being routed and running CyanogenMod but have just tried it on my girlfriend’s Galaxy S2 which is not rooted and running the stock ROM and that is not working either.
Thankfully I held onto my old 3GS to use as an iPod and TT works fine with that so at least I have a stop gap and know the dongle is not faulty
Hello:
I have tested TriggerTrap mobile for Android V 1.2.2 on Galaxy Note2 with a DIY Cable S and Pentax K5
The assembly works but:
a) the Bang feature is useless (at the moment) since the delay for activation is too long (maybe software fix?)
b) in Cable setting it seems that the K5 takes two images, is that necessary?
These are initial observations, I have not experimented with the other functions.
Keep up the good work !
J
Hi! It should only be taking one shot in Cable mode, potentially this is a sound signal issue in which case maybe you should email our support team at so that they can take a closer look. As for the delay on bang mode, I’m really not sure why the response would be so slow! PErhaps it is worth uninstalling and reinstalling the app just in case there is some odd delay setting that needs to be wiped clean. In fact while you’re there I think you should test out our Beta for android as we are attempting to make the response time even faster in the new version! you can find out how to become a Beta tester here: https://www.triggertrap.com/triggertrap-mobile-for-android-20-beta/
I’m graeftul you made the post. It’s cleared the air for me.
